Pandangan miring oleh kebanyakan orang tentang mitos dan ritus menjadi pemicu munculnya artikel ini. Penulis membela pandangan bahwa mitos dan ritus berpengaruh dalam kehidupan masyarakat baik masyarakat tradisional maupun masyarakat modern. Belajar dari sejumlah antropolog yang teorinya diakui dunia, penulis berpandangan bahwa mitos dan ritus menjadi unsur-unsur dasar dari agama. Mitos dan ritus mengandung nilai-nilai, membentuk watak atau karakter serta, mendorong adanya tingkah laku masyarakat. Lebih dari itu, studi mitos dan ritus telah memberikan sumbangan besar bagi studi Alkitab, terutama dalam kajian-kajian Antropologis terhadap teks-teks Alkitab.
