Pergeseran Moda Komunikasi Handphone terhadap Tradisi Haef di Masyarakat Desa Pakubaun
Abstract
Digital Communication Negotiation and Local Tradition: The Shift of Handphone Communication Modes toward the Haef Tradition in the Pakubaun Village Community. The rapid development of information and communication technology, particularly handphone, has fundamentally transformed the way humans build social relations in rural areas. This study aims to analyze the shift in digital communication modes through the use of handphones toward the haef tradition in Pakubaun Village, East Nusa Tenggara. Utilizing a descriptive qualitative approach with 11 informants, data were collected through observation and in-depth interviews. The theoretical framework employed includes George Herbert Mead’s Symbolic Interactionism and Marshall McLuhan’s Technological Determinism. The results indicate that communication technology is not neutral but acts as an active element that shapes social practices. A process of cultural negotiation occurs where handphones are utilized for information efficiency and speed (practical functions), while the haef tradition is maintained as a space of co-presence. This tradition carries values of respect, moral legitimacy, and intersubjectivity that cannot be replaced by digital technology. The novelty of this research lies in the analysis of communication as a value-laden social institution undergoing selective adaptation, where the people of Pakubaun act as active actors negotiating between modernity and the sustainability of local values.
